So, you're thinking about taking a concealed carry class?
That's great! But before you jump right in, let's make sure you're fully prepared. Here are a few things you should know and be able to do before signing up:
Familiarity with Your Firearm
First things first, you should have shot the specific gun you plan to bring to class. Knowing your firearm inside and out is crucial. You should be comfortable loading and unloading your pistol, releasing magazines, working safeties, and locking the slide open. If you can't do these things confidently, you might want to spend a little more time at the range or jump into one of our Intro to Pistol Classes before signing up.
Shooting Proficiency
Being able to hit a target at 21 feet is the benchmark for concealed carry proficiency. In a self-defense situation, most altercations occur at close range, so being able to accurately hit your target at this distance is essential to leaving the class with a certificate.
Safety First
Before you even think about taking a concealed carry class, you should be well-versed in the four universal safety rules of handling a gun:
- Treat every firearm as if it is loaded.
- Always point the muzzle in a safe direction.
- Keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to shoot.
- Be sure of your target and what is beyond it.
If you can confidently check off all these points, then congratulations! You're probably ready to take a concealed carry class. If not, don't worry. Sign up for the Intro to Pistol Class and you'll be ready in no time. Remember, when it comes to carrying a concealed weapon, safety and proficiency should always come first.
