FAQ list

I have never shot a firearm before. Is this a problem?
This is not a problem at all and I am so glad you are starting the process of learning to shoot firearms. You have three options: (1) Talk to a trusted friend that can take you to a range, (2) Go to your local range and schedule a beginner class, (3) Sign up through Hembock for either the "Personal Instruction Class" or the "Intro Pistol Class." Everyone should have some experience shooting a firearm before they sign up for the CPL class.
I have questions before I sign up for or take a class. What do I do?
If you have any questions at all please reach out either via the contact page on the website or at build@hembock.com. You can also call or text (269) 414-8799. It is very important that you have all your questions answered before you attend class. Do not at all feel like you are a bother for reaching out. Part of class safety is the right equipment and the right mindset.
Where are the classes held?
Classes are held at 2 locations. Lawton: Hembock — 84056 M 40, Lawton, MI 49065. Dowagiac: Dowagiac Conservation Club — 54551 M 51 N, Dowagiac, MI 49047.
Do I need a holster for my class?
You do not need to bring a holster to class. If you want to bring a holster to talk about it in class or check if it would be a good holster to carry, please bring it along.
Are you certified to teach CPL classes in Michigan?
I am certified to teach Michigan CPL classes through MCRGO (Michigan Coalition for Responsible Gun Owners). You can verify by searching the list for Derek Fankhauser and Mary Fankhauser.
Can I bring a 22lr or a revolver to class?
Yes. You are more than welcome to bring either.
What are the requirements to get my CPL?
Getting your CPL license has three requirements: (1) Take a certified CPL 8-hour training course, (2) Submit application to County Clerk, (3) Get fingerprints taken.
Will you cancel my class?
We will not cancel class due to weather or even a sick teacher. Rain or shine we will have class.
What if I can't make it to class?
Please reach out via text or call (269) 414-8799 and let us know. After that please find a future date and again reach out and let us know what class you will be attending.
Will I be the only woman in class?
Absolutely not! On average we have 4–6 women in each class. We have a female instructor, Mary. You will not be alone.
Do I have to live in the county the class is in?
No. This is a Michigan certified course and is recognized in all 83 counties. We welcome everyone.
